Kaz clearly thinks he's being discreet, but Nina knows Kaz, and she knows pining. Most of all, she knows he'll never say anything without a little nudge.

Without invitation, Nina slides into the chair across from Kaz and crosses her arms on the table. “You’re not as subtle as you think.”

Kaz doesn’t look up from the ledger he’s writing in, gloves dark against the light cream coloring of the pages. “And what am I trying to be subtle about?”

“Inej,” Nina replies smugly.

Kaz still doesn’t look up, but Nina sees the end of his pen halt slightly. Bullseye.

“I’ve seen you looking at her,” she continues, leaning forward on her arms. Any other guy would have taken notice of her ample cleavage by now. Darling Matthias would be red as an apple. Kaz doesn’t even glance her way. That’s even more proof of her very scientific findings, in Nina’s opinion.

“I look at all of you, it’s generally how discussions are held,” he says.

“Except this one, apparently.”

Kaz takes the hint and looks up from his writing. He still doesn’t look at her chest. Nina would almost be offended, if it wasn’t Kaz.

“Nina,” he says, a hint of fatigue in his voice. Any other time Nina might have had some sympathy, maybe cut him some slack. But not this time.

“You look at her when you think no one’s watching. Obviously you’re getting sloppy.”

“And this is, what, an intervention?” Kaz asks, arching one of his annoying perfect eyebrows. “Worried I’ll get caught one day?”

“No! Well, yes, but not to help you get better at being creepy,” Nina clarifies. “An intervention to help you get your head out of your ass.”

Kaz looks momentarily taken aback; it’s very brief, but Nina still counts it as a win. “Excuse me?”

“You need to say something to her,” Nina continues. “Use your words instead of pining until you die.”

“Nina,” he says again, and this time the fatigue is gone, replaced by a hardness that makes Nina frown. “You know I value your insights. You have a…unique perspective on things. But right now you don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know Inej is the most fantastic fucking person I’ve ever met,” Nina says heatedly, not willing to back down. “And that you’d be a fool to ignore whatever it is you two have going on.”

“I think it’d be best if you left now,” Kaz says coolly, and Nina sighs, knowing she’s not going to be able to get through to him when he’s like this.

“I hope she knocks some sense into you one day,” she grumbles, getting up from the table. “And I mean literally.”

Forget the nudge–Kaz needs to be goddamn pushed at this rate.
